I had to go to NYC the other day. I parked my car at the Westport Saugatuck Metro North railroad station and caught the 7:30 AM local train. The train took an extra ten minutes or so to get to Grand Central Station versus the express, but I didn’t mind. I love the downtime of just being able to read a book or surf the web on my ipad while I’m relaxing on the train.
NYC was, as always, bustling with activity. It always amazes me that no matter when I am in Manhattan, on any day, morning or night, there are so many people there – even on the weekends. There are thousands of people everywhere you look. It’s crazy. I love NYC. I was born in Long Island and spent many days of my childhood in NYC and my husband and I also lived there for a short while.
I had to run lots of errands, which I did. Of course, I had to take advantage of a sale or two while there. I always try to walk everywhere, unless it involves heading downtown. If so, I’ll take the subway. I don’t like taking cabs because I don’t want to be sitting in traffic for hours. Also, it’s my exercise when I can’t hit the gym in the morning, as I didn’t this morning.
The city has so much to offer and I sometimes wonder whether my husband and I should consider getting a place there. There are thousands of great restaurants and everything you need, basically right at your doorstep. My family loves the city and we often go into New York to see a show when we are all together, which is less and less often these days. We love heading to Central Park and walking around on a nice spring, summer of autumn day. However, we’ve come to realize that Manhattan is close enough to Westport, only an hour or so drive or train ride, that we don’t have to live there and deal with the crowds.
There are few things more comforting to me than getting off the train back into Westport after a long day in the city, and seeing all of the trees and green grass, and then viewing the water on the inlet as I arrive into the station. I can smell the water as I exit the train. It’s exhilarating. It’s nice to know that the city is nearby, yet Westport is now my home. I think I’ll stay here.
